“Thank you for the food, Eliza,” I say, dabbing the napkin at the sides of my mouth. She smiles and does the same, cleaning her luscious lips that I’ve admittedly thought of kissing throughout our dinner

“You’re welcome,” she replies, standing up silently from the table. I watch her stack up all our plates, and I glance at my daughter who fell asleep halfway through her meal. I stand to my feet, walk to the other side of the table, and gently lift Sarah into my arms so that I can clean her up and put her to bed.

I excuse myself from Eliza’s presence and carefully climb up the stairs with Sarah blissfully asleep. The argument with my father didn’t end well, as expected. It ended with both of us shouting obscenities at each other until he stormed off. I would still have been boiling in anger if it had not been for Eliza’s presence. One look at her fussing over the stove and half of the anger I felt dissipated into the air, with the remaining leaving as we conversed over the food we ate.

Maybe it was because of what my father said, my abrupt confession of love, or Eliza’s calming effect, but now I was more than adamant about taking her to the event tomorrow. I drop Sarah gently on the bed, giving her favorite stuffed animal, a white and pink bunny, into her arms so she would be comfortable while she slept. I cover her small body with the medium-sized pink comforter that was the same shade of pink as everything else in the bedroom.

I watch her sleep for a while until I remember that Eliza might leave the house before I even have the chance to tell her to stay and be my date to the event tomorrow. With that thought in mind, I kiss Sarah goodnight, put on her night light, and run down the stairs like my life depended on it.

“Eliza!” I call as soon as my foot reaches the landing. I bolt straight to the kitchen and meet her drying her hands on a dishcloth, looking alarmed.

“Did something happen?” she asks with worry laced in her voice searching my face and waiting for me to give her a response. I shake off my embarrassment with a smile and I take her hand in my own and lead her to the stools beside the marble countertop.

“Nothing is wrong,” I say once she’s seated. “I just wanted to ask you if you’d be my date for an event I have tomorrow evening.”

Her pink lips open in an oval shape and I remove my gaze from them as sudden memories of those same lips pressed to my face and neck flood my head. She closes her mouth after a few seconds and asks “It’s all part
